Following various experiements with 3 French engines, the design incorporated some of the best technology from the French designs. The four cyclinder, 4-6-0 design was so sucessful it became the basis for all subsequent GWR heavy passenger engines and the pacific (4-6-2) design, popular with other railways, was never embraced by the GWR, with only one prototype ever being built.
