This week saw Urban Games announce on Steam and their Facebook page the next major update to their popular transport management game, Transport Fever 2. The test branch on Steam is now available to download the latest version and test out the updated game as it nears full-scale roll-out.
In addition to the announced update, the news included the date which Mac users can add to their calendar when they can finally get their hands on Transport Fever 2. Mac users will be able to play Transport Fever 2 this Autumn…so not too long to wait! The Urban Games team has been busy reworking the Transport Fever 2 code base to operate without the OpenGL graphics library – something Apple has pulled support for.
Details on the update are sketchy at best, the list isn’t that long but reads as such:
Better error handling and feedback
Added in-game scripting console
Reworked script interface
Improved model editor features and usability
Various modding improvements
Various game improvements and bug fixes
In essence, the next big update is all about fixing what’s broken and adding better modding support. One thing which is very cool and I am looking forward to, is the promise of an extensive modding Wiki. For anyone who wants to try their hand at building a mod for Transport Fever 2, this is great news.
The list of work in progress and to come changes is very modding orientated which is fantastic news for all you mod authors. Urban Games say they’re working on:
Script interface additional features and improvements
Track modding improvements such as compatibility with stations
Better user interface modability in general
Mod parameters and better mod editing dialogue in menu
Model editor error handling and feedback
Various model editor usability improvements
Simulation performance optimization
Various game usability improvements
Various bug fixes and small improvements
The development branch release notes are already up and it’s an extensive list. Rather than copy it all out, here is the link to the release notes. Again, a lot of fixes and modding related notes but it’s great to see so much has been completed already. With another month or so to go before officially patching the game, I’m very excited to see the full extent of the update.
It will have been nearly 12 months since Transport Fever 2 launched before the Mac version rolls out the station. Many members of the Transport Fever 2 community have been harsh on Urban Games for not rolling out major game updates quicker. However, based on the size of the UG team and amount of work required to launch the Mac version, it is understandable that resources to update the game are spread a little thinly.
What we can hope is that once the Mac version is complete, updates for Transport Fever 2 will come a little quicker. At present, we’ve been getting a major update roughly every 3 months with little in-between. My hope is that there will be a lot more little updates between major updates towards the end of the year and into 2021. Urban Games have said that this is a work in progress title and there is much still to do and goals they would like to achieve.
Personally, I’m looking forward to the June update. I haven’t played Transport Fever 2 an awful lot the last few months and hope the update will implement the changes I’d like to reinvigorate my love for the series.
